I suppose it's equivalent to being up 21-7 in the Super Bowl (or at least a playoff game) with 5 minutes left and then losing. That's what the Czech Republic national team did last night in the Euro 2008 tournament in one of the most memorable collapses in European tournament play.
The winner of the match would move forward into the semi-finals while the loser went home. The Czech Republic started strong and led 1-0 at halftime and even pushed their lead to 2-0 early in the second half. But the Turkish team did not give up and drew to within 1 with a goal in the 76th minute. Then arguably the best Czech player in professional football, goalie Petr Chech, made a horrendous error in the 88th minute that allowed the tying goal.
At that point, everyone thought that the match would end in a draw which would require penalty kicks since they were even on all the other tie breakers. But the Turkish side put in the winner during injury time to move into the semi-finals. I am not a huge fan of soccer but I enjoy it more now than before we moved to Prague. And seeing the game boiled down to three minutes of highlights is more exciting than watching the whole game.
