What's wrong with this story? Oh yea, no motive...

You have to love this "reporting" by the local Czech media on the unexplained pummeling of a Czech cabbie, or least the denting of his cab, by three American soldiers stationed in Germany. Here is how the Prague Monitor reported the story today:

American soldiers attack Czech taxi driver
By ČTK / Published 7 May 2008

Cheb, West Bohemia, May 6 (CTK) - Three U.S. soldiers from a base in Germany attacked a Czech cab driver who drove them from Sokolov to Cheb on Sunday, local police spokesman Ladislav Boehm said.

The driver was not injured, but his car was damaged, Boehm said.

Three Americans aged 21, 25 and 35 years have come under the suspicion of assault.

Near the village of Dolni Dvory, they attacked a cab driver, 40, who had to stop instantly to avoid an accident. Then he fled, Boehm said.

A soldier, aged 25, several times kicked in the back door and rear fender, thus making a dent in it.

When the driver returned to the car and wanted to drive away, a soldier, aged 35, jumped off the moving car. As he fell to the ground, he suffered light head injuries.

The damage at the car is estimated at 50,000 crowns.

Damage to property charges have been brought against the American aged 25, Boehm said.

For no reason the American soldiers start hitting the cabbie, and then when he runs away they kick his taxi. If you know Czech taxi drivers at all you have every right to suspect that the taxi driver was somehow running up the meter on these guys and they then probably demanded that he stop the cab. When he didn't they opened up a can of whup ass on him. My theory, although not supported by any evidence, at least has the benefit of being plausible. You would think that it would be wasy to ask one of the three Americans why they did what they did (but that would involve, you know, actual reporting).

OK, here is the thing: this is a CTK news agency article. CTK news agency articles are known for having even six versions and updates in the subscriber system. Meaning that the author does not update the original one but a new article is always put up for subscribers with the specification of how it differs from the previous one. PM used an older version and the newer ones DID include the motive: the soldiers THOUGHT THEY WERE IN CHEB ALREADY so when they told the driver to drive them to a place in Cheb, HE DID. So three idiots who don't know geography.... there is your motive...
